Oil casing plays three core roles in oil and gas extraction: formation isolation

Oil casing plays three core roles in oil and gas extraction: formation isolation, channel construction, and wellbore protection, as follows:

1. Stratigraphic isolation: prevent interlayer fluid from interpenetrating

Function: By tightly bonding the cement sheath with the formation, the oil and gas reservoir is completely isolated from other formations (such as water layers and oil and gas reservoirs with different pressures).

Meaning: To avoid water intrusion during the mining process that leads to an increase in water content, or to prevent high-pressure fluids from entering low-pressure layers and causing well control accidents (such as well surges and blowouts).

Case: In multi-layer oil and gas reservoirs, oil casing can ensure the extraction of only oil and gas from the target layer, thereby improving recovery efficiency.

2. Channel construction: forming oil and gas production pathways

Function: Extend from the bottom of the oil and gas reservoir to the wellhead, construct a complete flow channel, support the oil pipeline, and guide the flow of oil and gas to the surface.

Meaning: To ensure long-term stable mining while providing structural support for subsequent production measures such as fracturing and acidification.

Data: High quality oil casing can reduce fluid flow resistance by about 15% -20% and improve production efficiency.

3. Wellbore protection: maintain wellbore stability

Function: Utilize the mechanical strength of the casing string (such as internal pressure resistance, external compression resistance, tensile strength) to resist formation pressure, rock creep, and construction impact.

Meaning: To prevent wellbore collapse, casing deformation or fracture, ensure wellbore integrity, and extend oil well life.

Case: In deep and ultra deep wells (such as shale gas wells), high-strength oil casing can withstand bottomhole pressures exceeding 100MPa.

Additional function: Adapt to complex mining environments

Corrosion resistance: For acidic formations (containing H ₂ S, CO ₂), sulfur resistant casing (such as L80-1, C90) is used to prevent hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion.

Thermal stability: In high-temperature formations (such as geothermal wells), special alloy casing (such as V150) is used to avoid material performance degradation.

Intelligent monitoring: Some high-end casings are equipped with built-in optical fibers or sensors to monitor real-time underground temperature, pressure, and strain data.

Summary: Oil casing is the 'lifeline' of oil and gas extraction, and its core function can be summarized as 'isolation, communication, and protection' - isolating the formation, constructing channels, and protecting the wellbore, directly determining the safety, economy, and lifespan of the oil well.
